Justin Stuckey Makes Magic and Wins GEM of the Year

Mealtime is often the bright spot in a patient’s day – a moment when they aren’t in pain or discussing their illness with a doctor, nurse, family or friends. When Justin Stuckey delivers meals to patients each day, he understands the importance of these moments. As a result of his outstanding work, Justin has been recognized as Morrison’s GEM of the Year.

Justin delivers meals to approximately 30 patients daily as a Catering to You Dining associate at Archbold Medical Center in Thomasville, Georgia. The value of Justin’s work is reflected in the praise he receives from these patients, many who require special diets, and their families. Here’s a great example.

The wife of one patient that received his meals from Justin recently asked to speak with his supervisor. She came to the hospital café and found Justin’s manager, who walked with the woman to a nearby table. As she began to speak, she was overcome with emotion and started to cry.

The woman said her husband was suffering from brain cancer and had lost his desire to eat. Justin noticed that he had no interest in the food offered on the menu. Undeterred, he worked to bring the patient something he would enjoy.

“He asked what food my husband would like to eat,” the patient’s wife told Justin’s supervisor, “and went out of his way to make sure everything was cooked to perfection and to my husband’s liking.” She also said that when Justin finished delivering the meals to other patients on his floor, he often came back to talk with her and her husband.

“She told me that Justin is a gift from God and was brought here for a reason.” She said, “He is like a son to us and always takes care of us.”

Justin’s compassion and determination to relieve others’ suffering earned him Morrison’s GEM of the Year award and a seat at Compass Night of Stars 2018. This annual celebration recognizes the extraordinary achievements of top performers across our sectors, including GEMs of the Year. With attendees from the US and Canada working in schools, corporations, stadiums and hospitals, our Compass Group family comes together each year to celebrate the best of the best of our associates with the experience of a lifetime.

This year’s Compass Night of Stars was held at the Hard Rock Cafe Orlando. Attendees were greeted with a red carpet, paparazzi, and a “black tie” gala to celebrate their accomplishments and exemplary service.

Justin said that receiving the GEM of the Year Award and attending the celebration demonstrates that the company values and appreciates his contributions. The award also helped him realize his own professional growth since joining Morrison two and one-half years ago.

“It shows that I’ve achieved another notch outside my comfort zone and how much I’ve evolved. I don’t particularly consider myself a ‘people person’, so that fact that I’m able to be recognized for a skill that isn’t a natural talent for me shows me how far I’ve come.”

His supervisor, says Justin deserves the GEM of the Year award because he makes the most of each encounter with the patients he serves. “I get at least one email a week from a patient praising Justin’s professionalism. He’s very dependable, does what is asked of him, and helps out other dining associates when needed. He goes above and beyond to make sure everyone is eating well and treated with respect.”
