Op-Ed: Total Health Starts in the Community — and in the Hospital, featuring Kyle Tafuri
Posted: 05/03/2024A food philosophy defines what a hospital stands for while also serving as an opportunity to differentiate itself from other hospitals. It is essential for hospitals to support their communities and represent a diverse group of suppliers. In the case of Hackensack Meridian Health, it created a unique partnership with a nonprofit organization, Common Market, that works with local farmers to expand access to markets. In July 2023, the hospital and its food service partner, Morrison Healthcare, committed to spending with local farmers, including Black, Indigenous, and People of Color producers, across 11 of its hospitals. Morrison Healthcare Signed onto Mayor Adams’ Plant-Powered Carbon Challenge

To that end, the mayor is leading a plant-powered challenge to reduce food-related carbon emissions by 25% by 2030. Morrison Healthcare at Mount Sinai Health System has joined the challenge. UPMC Children’s Hospital Expands Kosher, Halal Offerings

That, though, is exactly what UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh did when decided to increase its kosher and halal offerings for Jewish and Muslim patients and visitors, as well as its staff.
