Morrison Healthcare chef, Kristine Wolner was at a crossroads. A stint in college had been enough to convince her that her childhood dream of becoming a lawyer wasn’t meant to be. When she returned home to Austin, Minnesota, her parents gave her two other choices: Go back to school and find something that did interest her, or stay put and take over the family farm. “That wasn’t something I wanted to do, either,” Kristine tells us of her farming prospects.

Inspired by an article in FM, Garrett Lucas, CDM, CFPP, director of dining services at the Morrison Café at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) in Houston, saw an opportunity to reduce food waste and to feed the research animals at BCM, one of the leading centers for biomedical research in the country. While BCM is technically a college with no patients to feed, it is served by Morrison Healthcare, making it a unique hybrid account.

Often referred to as the hospital cafeteria, the cafe has changed its look and its menu, much to the enjoyment of Mayo staff and patients as well as vigilant area residents who have discovered an economical place to dine.

Lisa Abbay was named Outstanding Dietitian of the Year. Abbay was a clear choice for this year’s award, according to Ginger Carney, Tennessee Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics president elect-elect.  Abbay is the talent acquisition manager for Compass Group, our parent company. She is responsible for hiring dietitians and food and nutritional professionals from the east to the west coast and leads a team of recruiters across the U.S.

The partnership, which reduces the hospital’s food waste by providing weekend meals to hungry senior citizens, earned the 2018 Kentucky Aging Network Award for Outstanding Collaboration from the state’s Department for Aging and Independent Living. The program also earned the 2018 Outstanding Community Service Award from the Southeastern Association of Area Agencies on Aging, which represents a nine-state region.

Healthcare Innovator of the Year: Morrison at the University of Miami Hospital

When Morrison Healthcare took over operation of in-house foodservices at the three University of Miami Health System hospitals (UMH) a couple of years ago, it was given a mandate to “transform the campus to be what the University of Miami wanted to stand for, and that was a world-class organization,” says Kevin Sweizer, Morrison’s regional vice president who oversees operations at UMH. Quite a few changes and improvements in both infrastructure and service style later, Morrison led UMH to significant improvements in both the retail and patient dining programs.
