1920s

1920

The first Morrison’s Cafeteria opens for lunch on September 4th, 1920, in The German Relief Hall, a well-known landmark in Mobile, AL.

1925

Morrison’s general offices move to Mobile, AL, and the first logo, an old English tavern sign, is created.

1928

The Morrison Cafeteria Company merges with Piccadilly Cafeteria Company of Birmingham to create Morrison Cafeterias Consolidated, Inc.

1930s

1938

After 18 years in business, Morrison’s serves over 700,000 meals annually.

1940s

1946

Morrison’s forms The Morrison Merchandising Corporation, which supplied cafeterias with produce and, later, all cafeteria items, both food and non-food.

Morrison’s jump-starts their expansion program after war-time restrictions are lifted. Their first action was to open the “Cafeteria of Tomorrow” in Tampa, FL, which later won national awards from the American Restaurant Association for showcasing many modern innovations in foodservice and décor.

1948

Just one year after the opening of the “Cafeterias of 
Tomorrow,” Morrison’s has 15 cafeterias. Morrison’s 
Restaurants Inc. forms with the opening of The Town House Buffet.

1950s

1950

Morrison Food Services, Inc. is born after Canteen Corporation inquires about food services in the Business & Industry setting.

1954

Morrison Food Services, Inc. breaks into healthcare with its partnership with Candler Hospital in Savannah, GA.

1960s

1963

Morrison begins its vending division!

1966

Morrison relocates their headquarters to the First National Bank Building in Mobile, AL. Morrison also implements Employee Service Awards.

1968

Morrison Cafeterias Consolidated, Inc. rebrands to Morrison Incorporated as they acquire the Admiral Benbow Inn chain of 10 motels, a chemical company, a gelatin plant, and a printing/stationery company.

1970s

1972

Morrison Food Services provides total foodservice management to 184 hospitals, nursing homes, schools, office buildings, municipal facilities, industrial plants, military installations, and private clubs. In addition,
 60 Morrison Cafeterias are operating in 36 markets throughout the southeast.

1975

Morrison closes their fast-food division, Oogleblook, and their Burger Inn restaurants. They then create a Family Buffet Division.

1979

Morrison’s seven support companies realign under the name of Morco Industries, Inc.:

  3. Food Service Equipment Company, Inc.
  4. All-Southern Fabricators, Inc.
  5. Custom Cabinets, Inc.
  6. Morrison’s Coffee Company
  7. Morrison’s Chemical Company

Morrison’s Food Services is renamed Morrison’s Management Services.

1982

Morrison Incorporated acquires Ruby Tuesday’s 18 unit chain and forms Morrison’s Specialty Restaurant Division with the opening of the first L&N Seafood Grill at the World’s Fair in Knoxville, TN.

1987

Morrison Incorporated’s cafeteria division is renamed the Family Dining Division to escape adverse cafeteria connotations in the North. Morrison’s Management Services is renamed Morrison’s Custom Management Division and operates the foodservice management accounts.

1988

Morrison Incorporated’s contract food services division exceeds 800 accounts.

1990s

1991

Morrison’s Hospitality Group sells its facilities management accounts to Crothall Services Group.

1992

Ruby Tuesday celebrates its 20th anniversary!

Morrison relocates to their Atlanta Headquarters.

1996

After a company restructure, Morrison Health Care, Inc. forms and so began the company’s expertise in healthcare.

1999

Morrison Health Care, Inc. changes its name to Morrison Management Specialists, Inc. and forms two divisions: Morrison Healthcare Food Services and Morrison Senior Dining

2000s

2000

Morrison Management Specialists is positioned as a front runner in the $16 billion healthcare and senior living industries.

“The Morrison Way,” a personal mission statement dedicated to preserving Morrison’s ethical business practices and people-driven culture, is established.

2001

Morrison Management Specialists, Inc. joins Compass Group USA, the world’s largest food service provider.

Morrison launches “Catering to You” and “Dining on Call” room service programs.

2002

Morrison receives its first-ever Top 125 Training Award, and Morrison continues to earn this prestigious award in the future.

Compass Group USA and Morrison serve as the official catering service at the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, UT.

2006

Scott N. MacLellan begins his leadership as Morrison’s CEO

2007

Morrison requires that all producers supplying the company with cage-free eggs adhere to the standards of the third-party auditing organization, Humane Farm Animal Care. At this point in time, Morrison purchased 91.8 million cage-free shell eggs, which supports 353,000 chickens living in cage-free settings.

2010s

2010

Morrison introduces mVision®, a Business Intelligence (BI) tool that gives Morrison associates access to find information that helps to efficiently manage the business.

2011

Morrison introduces nutritious packaged grab & go meals, which are offered in the retail space and as after-hours dining for patients, staff, and visitors.

2012

2012 + Each company under Morrison Management Specialists becomes its own specialized sector, creating Morrison Healthcare, Morrison Senior Living, and Touch

2013

Tim Pierce is named CEO of Morrison Healthcare and shortly thereafter Morrison refreshes its brand upon a belief in The Power of FoodTM, redefining the culture of healthcare foodservice.

2014

Morrison Healthcare launches MyDining, a proprietary meal-ordering software that provides patients greater control over in-room dining while improving order accuracy, enhancing patient safety, and boosting patient satisfaction scores.

Morrison Healthcare and Crothall Healthcare align to form Compass One Healthcare. Together, as the companies of Compass One Healthcare, they deliver
 a seamless approach to providing hospital and health system clients with specialized food, nutrition, and support services. Bobby Kutteh becomes CEO of Compass One Healthcare.

2015

Mayo Clinic names Morrison Healthcare as its food and nutrition services provider.

2016

Compass One Healthcare forms a strategic partnership with Press Ganey, a leading provider of patient experience measurement, performance analytics, and strategic advisory solutions for healthcare organizations.

2017

Adding to its impressive roster of hospitals and healthcare systems, Cleveland Clinic names Morrison Healthcare as its new food and nutrition services provider.

2019

Compass One Healthcare is recognized as Support Services Supplier of the Year by Vizient, one of the largest member-driven healthcare performance improvement companies in the U.S.

Compass One Healthcare officially partners with the American Nursing Association by joining the Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation (HNHN) Grand Challenge.

Morrison Healthcare celebrates 65 years with its very first healthcare client, St. Joseph’s / Candler in Savannah, GA.

2022

Compass One Healthcare was selected by Modern Healthcare as a 2022 Best Places to Work in Healthcare. This is the first year, and first win as Compass One Healthcare.
