Climate-focused meals were on the menu at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus in February. Hosted in partnership with Inova Health Graduate Medical Education, the Inova Health Office of Sustainability, Inova Well, and Morrison Healthcare, the event introduced caregivers to a selection of plant-forward, lower-carbon menu items. The goal was to showcase how everyday food choices support both personal wellness and environmental responsibility.
A new Climate Friendly icon helped guests quickly identify which featured dishes supported both their wellness and the planet’s health.
Heather Farkas, Director of Sustainability with Morrison Healthcare, explained that initiatives like this one shine a light on the organization’s broader commitment to sustainable dining.
“Many of the meals we serve in our cafes and to our patients already meet our climate-friendly guidelines,” Farkas said. “The climate-friendly labeling helps share that impact with our guests and highlights the commitments we’re making for the planet.”
Attendees sampled several climate-friendly dishes, including black bean tostadas, Tex-Mex enchiladas, and “Not Fried” Chicken & Gravy made with Impossible Chicken. As they explored new flavors, they also learned how everyday food choices can advance larger sustainability goals.
“This climate-friendly food initiative has helped medical trainees and faculty see that the healthiest foods are often the most sustainable. As more patients want to eat in ways that support the planet, it offers a simple win for both personal and public health,” said Dr. Shirley Kalwaney, Director of Graduate Medical Education with Inova Health.
The event also encouraged physician engagement by inviting feedback through a QR-code survey. Insights gathered will help inform future menu planning and guide the expansion of Climate Friendly programming across Inova sites.
Climate-friendly meals are designed to have about half the carbon footprint of a typical meal. Using carbon accounting data from Planet FWD, an industry leader in measuring food-related emissions, these menu options help reduce environmental impact while still delivering satisfying, nutritious meals.
