Sustainable Practices in Food Service: The Right Thing to Do

As part of an ongoing initiative to promote sustainable practices, Morrison Healthcare introduced a recycled chef coat to operations. Every coat is made of 8-11 recycled water bottles, depending on the size of the jacket. With a growing organization and constant need for high quality uniform items, Morrison Healthcare purchased 63,224 chef’s coats during a three month period. That amounted to diverting 571,596 from ending up in a landfill. (Consider the global impact if the entire food service industry followed suit.)

The coats use a unique blend of cotton and recycled polyester from discarded plastic bottles. They supply the same quality and fit the needs of our chefs in the kitchen, creating an innovative win-win for food service organizations and corporate sustainability initiatives.

The power of sustainability initiatives lies in viable partnerships. Morrison Healthcare worked with Chefworks, who partnered with a global recycled polyester manufacturer to create a unique blend of cotton and recycled polyester from discarded plastic bottles, transforming them into sustainable performance fabrics. Corporate leadership supported this effort and clients are seeing the value it brings to their local facility and teams.

Beyond the immediate impact, this type of corporate citizenship can have a lasting impact on recruitment and retention efforts. The next generation of healthcare and support service associates are focused on doing good in their community. Environmental issues are often cited as one of the top concerns. Through these initiatives, Morrison Healthcare demonstrates that sustainability is important to both the company and their clients.

With food and farming responsible for a third of global greenhouse gas emissions, according to climate scientists, food and nutrition services are uniquely positioned to promote sustainable practices.  Compass Group is poised to lead the charge on carbon reduction, as the first in the industry to publish a worldwide commitment to reach climate net zero by 2050 and achieve carbon neutrality on scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. These goals align evidence-based criteria outlined by the Paris Climate Agreement, a treaty that helps organizations understand how to best strengthen their global response to climate change and support greenhouse gas reduction strategies.
