Healing Extends Far Beyond Medical Treatment
At Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital, healing extends far beyond medical treatment. For our pediatric patients and their families, comfort often comes in unexpected ways—sometimes through a favorite snack, a remembered birthday, or a smiling face that knows them by name.
For many, that face belongs to Chef Toan Nguyen.
Chef Toan is more than a culinary leader—he is a trusted presence, a source of joy, and a reminder that every child deserves warmth, dignity, and delight, no matter how long or short their hospital stay may be.
Care That Goes Beyond the Plate
Chef Toan regularly visits pediatric units not just to discuss meals, but to connect. He learns patients’ names, remembers their favorite foods, and builds genuine relationships with families—whether a child is with us for a single night or many months. His kindness leaves such a lasting impression that former patients often ask about him when they return for follow-up visits.
One former patient who spent over a year at the hospital asked to see Chef Toan during a follow-up appointment long after discharge—a powerful testament to the trust and connection he creates with every child he meets.
Thoughtful Gestures for Every Patient
Chef Toan believes that food can restore a sense of normalcy and comfort during any hospital stay. When children request special comfort foods not available on the menu, he personally shops for them. On weekends, he surprises patients with ice cream in the atrium. He delivers desserts throughout the hospital simply to brighten someone’s day.
These acts are not reserved for extended-stay patients—they are part of how Chef Toan approaches every child and family he serves.

Creativity That Supports Healing
For Chef Toan, creativity is part of care. When a child experiencing anxiety about physical therapy wished for a lemonade stand, Chef Toan and his team brought the idea to life—transforming therapy into a joyful, empowering experience complete with a decorated cart, lemonade, and cookies.
For another patient facing a long hospitalization, Chef Toan helped organize the purchase of an electric princess car so she could ride out in celebration on her discharge day—a moment of pure joy after an incredibly challenging journey.
Celebrating Milestones, Big and Small
Chef Toan never misses an opportunity to celebrate. He remembers birthdays, delivers thoughtful gifts, and finds ways to make ordinary days feel special— ensuring children feel seen and valued, no matter the circumstance. Patients light up when they see him coming, and families frequently share stories of his kindness long after their hospital stay ends.
Compassion for the Entire Care Community
Chef Toan’s generosity extends to everyone who brings comfort to our patients—including the therapy dogs who help ease fear and anxiety. He even makes homemade dog biscuits so our four legged caregivers feel just as appreciated.
He also leads his team in spreading joy throughout the hospital, from delivering toys during the holidays to serving hot chocolate to community first responders during special events. His compassion sets the tone for a culture rooted in kindness, creativity, and service.
Nourishing More Than Bodies
Chef Toan understands that small moments of joy can make a powerful difference for children and families navigating healthcare. Through food, connection, and heartfelt generosity, he transforms the pediatric experience—turning ordinary moments into meaningful memories.
